Catalytic Philanthropy
[1] “Catalytic philanthropy” is a term invented by Bill Gates, who is a globally well-known philanthropist.
[2] While truly believing in the power of capitalism, Bill Gates found that the market is not going to place huge bets on research when there are no buyers for a breakthrough. Surely, governments can and should bridge the gap in this regard, but face obstacles and are averse to risk since election cycles are short and political opponents willing to exploit failures.
[3] This has left a vast space for catalytic philanthropy to play a role, which has the high-stakes feel of the private market, but can transcend the key market limitations above. Some innovations which may gain earth-shaking returns have to be led by philanthropy and business and government can follow suit. In that way, political and market forces are shaped by philanthropy to meet the demands of people who need them most.
[4] Having said that, philanthropy does not intend to get rid of the market mechanism; rather, it seeks to improve its functions. The foundations funded by philanthropy aim at initiating projects and formulating a system that favors the poor, as well as guaranteeing purchases so a profit is also ensured for the business involved.
[5] In that way, philanthropy can make a greater impact on society and governments’ policies and save more people’s lives.

总之，每个词、词组、表述方式，在翻译中并非固定不变，而需根据语境具体变通。
